USDOT number

A USDOT(DOT) number is an identification number for your trucking company. All trucking companies that are using a commercial vehicle are required to apply for a USDOT number. An USDOT number is assigned to all trucking companies.

Do I need an USDOT number?

Your company needs a USDOT number if you have a vehicle that meets the following requirements:

  • Your vehicle has a gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight of 10,001 lbs or over
  • You’re hauling hazardous materials that require safety permits in one state or between states
  • Your vehicle can transport 8+ passengers and is for hire
  • Your vehicle can transport 15+ passengers and is not used for compensation

How long does it take to get an USDOT number?

Once we complete the correct paperwork, you can get your USDOT number within a day. It is active right away. However, you need trucking insurance and may need additional permits to haul legally depending on the state you’re in.

MC number

An MC number is essentially your trucking authority. The MC number needs to be shown on your truck and looks like this: MC-123456-C. Not all trucking companies need to apply for a MC number. An MC number is needed when you’re planning on hauling loads outside of your home state. Texas based carriers do not need a MC number if they’re staying in Texas only.

Do I need a MC number?

Your trucking company needs an MC number if it meets the following requirements:

  • You’re operating for-hire
  • You’re transporting passengers through interstate (between states)
  • You’re hauling federally regulated loads

How long does it take to get a MC number?

MC numbers take at least 21 days to be active. You will also need to get trucking insurance and meet other requirements for your trucking authority to be active.
